本書針對中國境內在改革開放後的教育公平性進行分析,作者首先建立了教育公平評價指標體系及評價方法體系,其根據有四:教育機會公平、公共教育資源配置的公平、教育品質的公平、教育成就的公平作為評價的體系,並藉由標準差、變異係數、泰爾指數、阿特金森指數、基尼係數等方式建構教育公平評價方法體系。接著本書作者利用CGSS每年的數據從城鄉、性別、民族、階層及年齡的維度綜合評估各種教育差距的情況及變化趨勢;其分析的項目分別是:城鄉教育的公平、性別教育的公平、地區教育的公平、階層教育的公平,以上四項後,得出結論。本書共分8章,第1章討論了本書的研究背景、理論基礎和範圍。第2章討論教育公平的測量的指標體系和方法。第3和4章分別討論城市和農村間教育的公平程度。第5章總合討論城鄉之間教育的公平程度。第6章討論性別教育的公平程度。第7章討論地區教育的公平程度。第8章討論階層教育的公平程度。每章下分三節,分別是測度方法及樣本數據、測度與比較、結論與政策啟示。
